Kidney Function and Improving eGFR

Dr. Alisha Bhatia, N.D., shares holistic strategies to support kidney function, improve eGFR, and enhance overall wellness through natural health solutions.

Kidney Function and Improving eGFR

This week, I was thrilled, a patient’s kidney function test, a part of the “Comprehensive Metabolic Panel” in your labs, had in the past shown low eGFR (glomerular filtration rate).

We made a few tweeks, including a chinese medicine supplement, and it went from 58 to 71, this matched another patient who went from 59 to 73!

Kidneys play a crucial role in maintaining overall health, filtering waste, balancing electrolytes, and regulating blood pressure. Yet, kidney health often goes overlooked until issues arise, here are some simple ways to support them.

1. Stay Hydrated but Don’t Overdo It

Proper hydration helps kidneys efficiently remove toxins. Aim for around 8 cups a day, but adjust based on activity level, climate, and individual needs. Overhydration can strain the kidneys, so listen to your body and drink when thirsty.

2. Balance Your Diet

A kidney-friendly diet is low in salt, processed foods, and added sugars. Excessive sodium can lead to high blood pressure, which strains the kidneys. Focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and try to limit red meat and overly processed foods.

3. Monitor Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar

High blood pressure and diabetes are leading causes of kidney disease. Regular check-ups to monitor these levels can help you catch issues early. If you’re managing either condition, work with a healthcare provider to keep these levels in check.

4. Exercise Regularly

Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight and blood pressure, supporting kidney health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise, most days of the week. Even brisk walking can make a big difference!

5. Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol

Smoking and heavy alcohol use can damage blood vessels, impacting kidney function. Reducing or quitting these habits protects not only your kidneys but also your heart and lungs.

6. Be Cautious with Medications

Overuse of NSAIDs like ibuprofen can harm kidneys over time, especially if taken frequently. Always follow recommended dosages and consult a healthcare provider for long-term use.
