Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is an enzyme in the body with multiple functions. It has been noted as a molecule that is important in the progression of cardiovascular disease,  dampening inflammatory responses,  prompting memory and learning; it also has a significant role in neuroplasticity.

Now I guess you\’re wondering what any of this has to do with my mood?!

When the blood concentration of MMP-9 is elevated it can:

  • increase inflammation

  • alter memory and learning

  • negatively impact neurological development.

When we think about mood, whether that’s feelings of sadness, irritability, or anxiety; it\’s vital to acknowledge that it is influenced by multiple factors.

However, the neurological system is one of the greatest influences in how we are react mentally, emotionally, and psychologically.  If we look into MMP-9 there are several articles linking it to psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Several articles discuss MMP-9’s influence on the nervous system and more significantly  that it supports “overall excitatory/inhibitory balance and neuronal population dynamics, which are important to mood and memory.” (Alaiyed, 2020).

MMP- 9 could be a marker to consider for any mood disorders; like depression, anxiety, or even somatic illness.  It is also noted that “  MMP-9 inhibitors possess potential therapeutic effects for depression.” ( Hong Min, 2022).
