It’s time to get back to some basics, so that you can stay strong as the kids go back to school. Even in the information era we are in, it’s always good to be reminded, and do a self check for the foundations of good health.
Foundations of Good Health Include:
-
Sleep: 6-8 hours is needed for your body to restore and rejuvenate, but insomnia seems to be an epidemic. Ask yourself right now, do you get good quality ample sleep? If not, take a step in that direction today. Maybe it’s magnesium, or melatonin, or a meeting with your doctor.
-
Stress: it’s kind of a fact of life, but do you have some self care tools that you use weekly, if not daily? Meditation and deep breathing are a couple easy and free things. Just 5 minutes per day, compounded over time, actually can prove to be beneficial.
-
Supplements: while there are so many things that can boost your immune system, these are just a few of my favorites:
Vitamin D: it is important to test, so you know the best dose you need, to have your levels be in an optimal range (60-80 ng/mL). Average dose during fall/winter is 5000 IU or 125mcg
NAC: this antioxidant, N-Acetyl Cysteine, aids in respiratory health, as well as helps your body, make another powerful natural antioxidant, Glutathione. Average dose is 600-900 mg 1-3x/day
Zinc: this mineral is found in several foods, but supplementation may be needed.
Fun fact, if you see white spots on your nails, that could be a sign of deficiency. Low levels can be connected to decreased sense of smell and taste. Average dose is 15-30mg/day.
Probiotics: did you know 70% of your immune system is found in your gut?
There are so many types available that can vary in meeting other needs. In general, it is good to find one that has both Bifido and Lacto species.
